You must do your part to achieve that beautiful smile!

Cooperation is key!
Periodically patients will ask us if they will have to wear rubber bands or elastics. The answer is usually “yes” as most patients will be asked to wear them at one time or another to get their teeth to fit together like “gears”. They can be worn in any number of configurations. The elastics are attached to hooks on the brackets or the bands. The end results of your treatment depends upon YOU, the patient, following the instructions for wearing the elastics properly. Be sure to follow Dr. Nett’s instructions completely to finish your treatment on schedule or maybe a little early if possible!! Here are a few helpful hints:
● Always carry extra elastics with you; we will give you plenty of them. Leave an extra pack in your book bag, mom’s purse or in the car.
● Do not “double-up” elastics. If the force is too strong, it could injure the roots of your teeth and make the teeth move slower.
● If you lose your elastics or are running low, call our office. You can stop by and get more, or we’ll mail them to you. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call us. We are here to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted!

Orthodontic Treatment In Two Phases
Sometimes when we hear the expression or phrase “orthodontic treatment”, we automatically think of a teen or pre-teen in braces. You may not realize that in some cases, Dr. Nett may recommend starting braces earlier. Your child may still have quite a few baby teeth, but we can initiate a “Phase One” phase of treatment to correct some developmental problems. Some examples of these might be severe crowding, a crossbite, or if the upper or lower jaw is growing incorrectly. In order to detect these problems, the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that all children have an orthodontic check-up by the age of 7.
If your child has one of these developmental problems, they might benefit from this “Phase One” phase of orthodontic treatment to correct whatever the problem might be. By initiating this early phase of treatment, Dr. Nett can intercept a problem which might otherwise cause additional problems if left untreated. Once the problem is corrected the braces would be removed and a retainer would be worn. Dr. Nett would continue to monitor your child while the remaining baby teeth are lost and the permanent teeth are erupting.
Once the permanent teeth have all erupted the second phase or “Phase Two” treatment would be initiated, if needed. “Phase Two” treatment consists of traditional braces to align the teeth into their proper positions.
Every person is unique which makes every treatment plan unique. Dr. Nett communicates to the patient and parent any concerns he see at the initial examination appointment. In most cases, early treatment is unnecessary and your child will simply be monitored until full eruption of the adult teeth is complete. If treatment is indicated, a series of x-rays, photographs and models would be done on the patient to get the ideal treatment plan for your child’s individual needs.
What are some signs that braces may be needed?

●Upper front teeth protrude excessively over the lower teeth, or are “bucked”
●Upper front teeth cover the majority of the lower teeth when biting together, also known as a “deep bite”. This can cause excessive wear on the lower front teeth ov
er time.
●Upper front teeth are behind or inside the lower front teeth. This is known as an “under bite”.
●Upper and lower front teeth do not touch when biting together. This is known as an “open bite”.
●Crowding or overlapping teeth OR excessive spacing between teeth

●Upper teeth are inside of lower teeth when biting. This is known as a “cross bite”
