What Is Headgear?
Posted by NettOrtho in orthodontics on August 25, 2010

Headgear is a removable orthodontic appliance consisting of a metal facebow, which attaches inside of your mouth to the braces and a cloth covered neckstrap, which fits around the back of your neck. The headgear is designed to move the upper teeth back to reduce the protrusion or overjet. Overjet is the distance the upper teeth protrude out in front of the lower teeth. In many cases, the headgear pushes back the upper teeth to create room for all of the permanent teeth, thus avoiding the need to remove permanent teeth. The use of headgear can also hold back the growth of the upper jaw allowing the lower jaw growth to catch up. Not all patients need to wear headgear. Dr. Nett will let you know once he meets with you and evaluates your individual orthodontic needs.
WHEN IS HEADGEAR WORN?
To achieve the best results with the headgear, it needs to be worn around 12 hours each day. These hours should include a combination of waking and sleeping hours. These hours do not have to be consecutive to be effective. Your waking hours can include after school and while doing homework, watching TV or reading. After dinner or the last meal of the evening, brush your teeth and braces thoroughly, hook up the headgear and wear it all night long. The first week with your headgear, we will let you gradually build up to wearing the headgear the 12 hours. Follow this schedule:
DAY 1–2 hours
DAY 2–4 hours
DAY 3–6 hours
DAY 4–Approx. 4 waking hours and then start wearing it all night long
DAY 5 and all days thereafter–Continue wearing the headgear around 4-5 waking hours and all night to achieve the 12 hours of wear each day. Dr. Nett will let you know if you can decrease the number of hours with the headgear or if you can stop wearing it all together. Be sure to bring the headgear with you to each of your orthodontic visits so we can check how it is fitting to make adjustments as needed.
ADJUSTMENT PERIOD
When headgear is first worn, expect some initial discomfort. This is because your teeth are being moved. Advil or Tylenol (or whatever you take when you have a headache) can be taken 30 minutes before the headgear is hooked up. This soreness will go away after just a few days of daily wear. Cooperation is very important to achieve the smile you have always wanted!!
Healthy After School Snack Ideas For Patients With Braces

Brown Rice cakes (unsalted or lightly salted)
• Spread with natural peanut butter.
• Top with reduced-fat natural cheese and/or lean meat.
Fruit and Vegetables
• Make them easy to grab: Cut, chop, or slice fresh fruit and vegetables to prevent loosening any of the braces. Store them in the refrigerator in easily accessible containers; store grapes in a large, open bowl in the fridge; store fresh fruit in a bowl on the counter.
• Make vegetables more appealing by serving them with low-fat dip or salad dressing.
• Although fresh fruit is best, unsweetened applesauce or fruit canned in juice or extra-light syrup can be good options, especially when pressed for time.
Baked Tortilla Chips and Salsa
• Consider serving low-fat refried or whole beans in addition to salsa.
• If you have time, make nachos by adding extras like melted reduced-fat cheese, diced tomatoes, green peppers, onion, low-fat sour cream, and guacamole.
Whole Grain, Low-fat Crackers
• Serve with reduced-fat natural cheese and/or lean meat. If using packaged meat, choose “natural” or “nitrite-free” varieties with minimal processing and preservatives, and those with less than 20% of the daily value for sodium.
• Spread with natural peanut butter or reduced-fat cream cheese (plain or flavored).
Whole Wheat (or Other Whole Grain) Miniature Bagels–Be sure to use your fingers to tear the bagels into pieces verses biting into them to avoid loosening a bracket.
• Top with reduced-fat natural cheese and/or lean meat.
• Spread with jam, natural peanut butter, or plain or flavored reduced-fat cream cheese.
• To add texture, toast the bagel but only lightly so it is not too hard for the braces.
• If you have time, make miniature pizzas: Toast bagels first to prevent sogginess, then add spaghetti or pizza sauce, reduced-fat cheese, and toppings and bake briefly.
Unsweetened Whole Grain Cereal and Low-fat Milk
• Top with fresh fruit like blueberries, sliced bananas, or strawberries.
• Add dried fruit like raisins or cranberries.
Reduced-fat or light String Cheese
• This is a good source of protein and calcium, and a great accompaniment to any snack. Try serving with fruit, vegetables or whole grain crackers.
Fruit and Yogurt Smoothie
• You have many options, so be creative! Use low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt or frozen yogurt as the base. Blend in fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit. Throw in ice cubes, if needed, to reach the desired consistency. Remember not to chew on the ice cubes!! If this is too tempting, avoid adding them!
• You can add a splash of low-fat milk or 100% fruit juice, depending upon the desired flavor and consistency
Enjoy your after school snacks and let’s be healthy!!
